Exciting San Juan del Sur Day Trips
The most popular side trips from San Juan del Sur are the towns of Granada and Masaya and Ometepe Island. While each town can be visited in a single day, a trip to Ometepe Island will require at least one overnight stay. For your transportation and tour needs, we highly recommend Rommel A. Gutierrez, the owner of Caballero Tours and Travel Nicaragua. He is friendly, reliable, professional, and speaks excellent English, offering tours at reasonable prices. Granada
Visit Nicaragua’s oldest and most beautiful city. Spend a day hopping from church to church in the city center, visiting a museum or cigar factory, taking a boat tour to one of the many islands, and enjoying excellent Nicaraguan steak. The Drive to Granada from Casa Flores is just under two hours. If you have time for a more leisurely visit, there are many places to stay.

Masaya
The Masaya Volcano National Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Nicaragua’s Pacific region. Here, you can get close enough to peer into its active crater and learn about the area’s unique flora and fauna. You can also tour a nearby cave that once served as a hideout for Sandinista rebels.
End your trip with a leisurely visit to the expansive Masaya Artisan Market to shop from local artists and enjoy an excellent meal before your drive home. The drive to Masaya is approximately 2.5 hours from Casa Flores.

Ometepe Island
Ometepe Island, located in southwest Nicaragua’s expansive Lake Nicaragua, is renowned for its stunning twin volcanoes. The active Concepción Volcano dominates the northern part of the island, while in the south, trails lead up to Maderas Volcano and the picturesque San Ramón Waterfall.
Visitors can explore ancient petroglyphs at the Ometepe Museum in Altagracia and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, and swimming at Ojo de Agua, a natural spring or one of the many beautiful beaches. Ferries to Ometepe Island depart daily from San Jorge, less than an hour’s drive from Casa Flores. To fully experience the island’s wonders, we recommend planning at least one overnight stay.
