About Our Caretakers and Amenities

The Caretakers (Cuidadors)

The Rodriguez Family

Francisco and Hayda are the caretakers (cuidadors) of Casa Flores. They live adjacent to the property with two of their three children, Jose and Francie. Their oldest daughter, Fernanda, lives with her husband and daughter in Managua.

Jose is in school to learn English. He is conversational in the language and welcomes the opportunity to practice. All other members of the family speak only Spanish.

House Utilities

Internet

Internet

Please enjoy using our Wi-Fi throughout your stay. The router is located beside the television and so reception is strongest in the living room. If using the internet in the upstairs bedrooms you will need to logon to a ranger extender with the same password.

Internet service is provided with fiberoptic cable (70 Mbs) and is virtually always available to allow remote access for ‘digital nomads’ and entertainment streaming.

Electricity

Electricity in San Juan del Sur is expensive and unreliable. As a result, we installed a solar-powered electrical system for Casa Flores in 2022. The system can nearly power the entire home off-grid, effectively eliminating blackouts.

Please note that excessive electricity use at night may deplete the solar batteries before sunrise. If the batteries are depleted, the system is designed to automatically switch to the grid until the solar power is restored.

During this time on the grid, the house will be at risk for a temporary blackout. You are not likely to experience this inconvenience, as it requires the coincidence of a power failure to the grid at the same time as a battery depletion. However, if it occurs, you should have power restored through the solar-powered electrical system by 8:00 a.m.

You will receive 10 KWh of electricity for free and then be charged approximately $0.50 per KWh thereafter.

Air Conditioners and Hot Water Heater

Due to their high power requirements, the solar-powered electrical system does not power the air conditioners and hot water heater. These amenities continue to draw power directly from the grid, making them vulnerable to power outages.

The high power requirements also make these amenities costly to operate. As a result, we must charge a fee for their use. The appliances are metered, so electricity use can be accurately measured. The cost to you will be $0.50 USD per kilowatt hour. This translates to about $1.00 USD for 2 hours with a single AC unit running.

Water

Casa Flores uses a private well to supply running water to the house. Our cuidador, Francisco, ensures that the water tank and pool are kept full for your convenience.

We do not recommend drinking the well water.

A five gallons drinking water bottle is provided in a dispenser upon check-in and additional refills available at many shops in town

Toilets

Please do not flush any toilet paper or feminine products in the toilet. We have trash bins in all bathrooms for the disposal of paper and sanitary products.

Pool

A private infinity pool with lounge chaises is at your disposal. It is maintained and cleaned daily by Francisco. An eco-friendly solar powered pump provides filtration.

Location

The house is located at Playa Remanso (sometimes called Playa Sucio). To get there take the new Emerald Coast Highway (La Costanera) heading south from NIC 16 directly to the entrance of the Remanso beach development. Proceed through the security checkpoint on the main road until you reach Casa Flores. You will need to present a guest pass to enter the development.

Driving, Transportation and Parking

Construction of the new Emerald Coast Highway (La Costenera) provides paved access directly to Playa Remanso Development and obviates the need for a 4×4 vehicle. Once inside the development the drive to Casa Flores is a short ride on an unpaved road that can be negotiated by a 2-wheel drive vehicle with standard clearance. A parking area is available. If you prefer not to rent a vehicle, car services are available for local and remote transportation. We recommend Rommel at 505-8685-0501.

Safety and Security

Violent crime in and around San Juan del Sur is rare but there is a risk of theft of cell phones and other personal items that are not attended to properly. As for any travel, be aware of your surroundings. We do not recommend walking alone late at night either in town or at Playa Remanso. While at the beach do not leave valuables unattended.

At Casa Flores security is enhanced by our cuidador family who live in an adjacent home with an unobstructed view of the property allowing for constant monitoring. We recommend nighttime use of external LED lights for added security. (Please do not use the lights above the outdoor dining area unless you are eating there, as the bulbs are high and difficult to replace.)

Health and Emergencies

A new hospital in San Juan del Sur offers medical care in case of a health emergency.

Several pharmacies in town also dispense medications, including antibiotics, without a doctor’s prescription. If you need assistance with a medical emergency, contact Property Manager Harry Yubank at 505-8685-0501.

Beach Access

Playa Remanso is a 5-minute walk from the home down a rather steep paved road. You can also access the beach by vehicle using the Remanso Hotel parking area. Have the Remanso Guest Pass available if approached by a parking attendant.
