The Beaches
The ocean water temperature varies daily, but it’s generally comfortable for swimming. Be thoughtful as the surf can be rough with occasional rip tides and there are no lifeguards on duty. While there are many local beaches available for you to enjoy, we highlight three below.

Playa Remanso
Casa Flores is located at Playa Remanso, the premier beach serving San Juan del Sur. Playa Remanso is generally considered a good beach for beginner and intermediate surfers. Several surf shops at the beach rent boards for $10 per day and offer lessons for $20.
Several taco bars on the beach serve food and beverages. The prices are slightly higher than in town, but they are a convenient spot to sit, relax in the shade, and watch a beautiful sunset.
From Casa Flores you are a short (15 minute) hike from Playa Tamarindo, an isolated sandy beach that is a favorite for surfers who desire longer rides with no crowds. The trail to Playa Tamarindo starts at the hill atop Casa Flores, the cuidador family will be happy to show you the way.
Playa Maderas
Playa Maderas is located 20 minutes north of Casa Flores and is accessed by car. Parking is available. If visiting this beach consider stopping at HUSH, a hostel and restaurant with excellent views and a pleasant laid-back vibe. You can walk to HUSH vial a steep but manageable 15 minute walk or drive there with on-site parking available.
Playa Hermosa
Playa Hermosa is a short drive or an intermediate hike from Casa Flores. If hiking you will need to be escorted by a guide that can be arranged by the cuidador family. There is a $3 USD fee per person to use the beach facilities (rest room, shaded cabanas, showers). The beach features a restaurant (with relatively high prices) and surf shop with boards and lessons available.
Activities
Surfing
Playa Remanso is the ideal place to learn to surf. The waves are well-suited for beginner and intermediate surfers. Boards and lessons are available on the beach at a modest price.
Hiking
You can easily find excellent beginner to intermediate hiking opportunities right outside your front door as Casa Flores. There are numerous coastal hills that can be summited within an hour and offer commanding views of local beaches and the Guancaste Province of Costa Rica. The cuidador can accompany you to the trailhead of a highly recommended 1.5 hour intermediate hike that is marked by white ribbons. Contact Harry Yubank, the property manager, for other local hikes that access the light house and Jesus statue in San Juan del Sur as well as other trails through local rustic villages. Plan on completing your hike by 11:00 to avoid excessive sun and heat.
Dirt Roads and Ocean
Unpaved roads in and around Remanso afford excellent opportunities to visit remote and picturesque locations by bicycle, 4×4 quad and dirt bikes, all of which can be rented in town. Fishing trips ( we recommend Boat Charters, 505-8685-0501) and sailing excursions with swimming and sightseeing (we recommend SALT, 505-7524-7813) are available. For assistance please contact the property manager directly or use the contact form on this website for inquiries.

Grocery Shopping
There are two “super mercados” in San Juan del Sur, Pali and Ahora Mas, both located just outside of town. We recommend the newer Ahora Mas with more products and wider aisles. While you can find most of what you need there under one convenient roof, consider shopping at the numerous specialty markets in town.
